FENCE REMOVAL AND MODIFICATION PROJECTS
Contact: Craig Deutsche, (310-477-6670), craig.deutsche@gmail.com

People and places become special, not when they take care of us, but rather when we take care of them. It is the same with the Carrizo Plains National Monument. Volunteers have been, and will continue to be, the true owners of the land. Although many volunteer opportunities exist, the longest continuing project has been removal or modification of barbed wire fencing which otherwise is a handicap to the mobility of the pronghorn antelope. To date about forty miles of these fences have been either removed or modified by volunteers. Ten people can remove a mile of fence in a day. There are at least another forty miles of fencing that have been identified for future efforts. The tools are bolt cutters, pliers, hammers, and heavy leather gloves. The sites are the wide spaces far from the busy roads, with sun, sky, and the overwhelming quiet. Typically the group will work on Saturday, stay overnight in one of the Monument campgrounds, and then use Sunday for either a hike or for sightseeing. Everyone is invited without restriction. A call to one of the leaders listed below will get you details of the particular project.
